In
his book Face to Face, Ken Boa takes
Scripture texts and daily personalizes them so that one can pray Scripture back
to God. I find it extremely helpful.
In
one of today’s prayers, Ken uses Ephesians 4:13. His prayer reads:
Lord Jesus Christ,
grant that as Your body, we might reach unity in the faith and knowledge of
You, the Son of God, so that we will become mature and attain to the whole
measure of Your fullness.
Paul
is saying in Ephesians that any disunity as a body of believers hinders our
maturation. We won’t get a chance to grow up as a church unless we become as
one. In a positive way, the more we come together and love each other, the more
we will grow and mature.
I
love watching young children learn to run. At first, they are uncoordinated and
awkward as their parts are not yet cooperating with each other. However, as
they grow and mature they run not only efficiently but gracefully.
What
would today’s church look like as it runs? I don’t think it would run that
beautifully, do you? Yet there is hope. The hope is found in our coming
together. When we do, we will be grace-full.
That’s
why I am so excited about our present 40
Days of Worship! and our September 22 service at Cove Park with other
churches. On September 22 at 10 a.m. we are joyfully gathering as one for the
sake of the One! I can’t wait.
My
prayer over these 40 days is that we will become grace-full and that the Holy
Spirit would work in us even more and fulfill Jesus’ prayer in John 17:23:
“I in them and You
in Me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that You
sent Me and loved them even as You loved Me.”
